His brother’s death did not take him by surprise, but was his redemption after a long ordeal. Francis wanted to become more and more like Jesus and this longing transformed him to the point where he bore the signs of Jesus on his body. This happened two years before his death. One year before his death, almost blind and in constant pain, he wrote the famous Canticle of the Sun, in which he referred to death as “Brother Death”. Everything had become brothers and sisters to him. Dying, he said to his brothers: I have done mine, what is yours, may Christ teach you.
