In the poorest state in northeastern Brazil (Maranhão), public health care is inadequate. Wound care that would need surgical intervention is often not performed, if the patient cannot pay, or only after a very long wait. Therefore, one of our Sisters visits patients in their homes as a nurse, treats wounds, changes dressings, advises patients and relatives, establishes networks with social workers and provides support with necessary medication.
In addition, the Sisters in collaboration with the parish there have begun a project for people in crisis situations, especially for middle-aged women who, due to various life circumstances, are reaching their limits. The parish has provided a room where the Sisters trained for this purpose can conduct pastoral conversations, offer ear acupuncture, foot reflexology, relaxation exercises … for crisis intervention, activation of self-healing forces and reorientation.
Donations are used to purchase bandages, medications and other medical equipment / supplies.
